The Hunstman World Senior Games
The Hunstman World Senior Games, established in 1987 as the World Senior Games, is an annual international senior athletic competition held each October in St. George. Athletes and sporting enthusiasts age 50 or older compete in a wide array of events, from team sports like bowling and volleyball to singles events like road races, archery, and mountain biking. The results are determined in a way similar to Olympic events, with the top three in each sport awarded Gold, Silver, or Bronze medals, and outstanding contributors to the games are inducted to the Hall of Fame each year.
In addition to the athletic element of the Games, there is also an emphasis on health and wellness. Seniors who participate or attend the Games have access to potentially life-saving screenings for breast and prostate cancers, as well as glaucoma, diabetes, high blood pressure or cholesterol, and decreased bone density. These screenings are conducted by volunteers from the medical field, who are frequently assisted by nursing students. The equipment necessary to conduct the screenings is provided by sponsors.
There is also a great amount of socialization present at the Games. Concerts, dances, and awards ceremonies are an integral part of the festivities, bringing athletes and guests together to encourage and celebrate each individual's accomplishments. The Hunstman World Senior Games actively promote peace, health, friendship, and fun.
